Why Make Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm?
Why would anyone want to make their own lip balm? After all, can’t you buy a 3 pack at Walmart for just a few dollars? Wouldn’t that be much easier? Well, yes and no. It would probably be quicker to throw some in your shopping cart, but what if I told you, you could make 50 tubes of your own healthy lip balm in just 10 minutes!
Healthy, guilt-free lip balm that YOU get to customize. It’s really simple and actually fun to do. My kids love getting to pick out their next ‘flavor’ (they actually mean scent LOL). But I am pretty sure my youngest daughter actually eats some of it. Heaven help me. Thankfully I know all the ingredients are safe, right?!
One of my friends first shared this recipe with me, but I’ve added my own spin to it and can’t wait to share it with you!
Benefits of Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm
In case you didn’t know, my oldest daughter (not the one who eats the lip balm) has some food and dye allergies. We’re very thankful to have been able to reverse some of her allergies, but she is still highly allergic to strawberries, mint, tomatoes and red dyes. Which, as you can imagine, makes it quite difficult at times to find things like lotion, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and you guessed it, lip balm! Trying to find a dye-free, peppermint free, strawberry free toothpaste or lip balm is next to impossible. Which led me to making our own. That way I can control the ingredients and it’s really quite simple. And I don’t have to worry as much about Anna eating them. Ha!
As an added bonus, making my own lip balm also helps us to avoid some shady ingredients in drug store versions that are known to cause a lot of health issues. It’s especially important to be aware of these ingredients because we are putting these products on our lips and we can easily consume them, like I mentioned before.
5 Harmful Ingredients in Conventional Lip Balm
These are some common ones to watch out for and avoid:
- Parabens (also known as other ingredients that end in -paraben like methylparaben and butylparaben): Used as a preservative, parabens are widely recognized as endocrine disruptors. They are known to increase the risk of breast cancer and other reproductive issues.
- Petroleum jelly: Yes, the main ingredient in Vaseline! Petroleum jelly is a highly refined oil made from fossil fuel. Not only does it block our pores, it also contains carcinogens and chemicals known to cause estrogen dominance.
- Synthetic colors and dyes: These are especially common in tinted lip balms. Synthetic colors are composed of heavy metals that cause allergies and irritation, and if accumulated for a long time, are even known to cause cancer!
- 4. Chemical sunscreens (also labeled as avobenzone, homosalate, oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and octocrylene): All of these chemicals help the sunscreen be absorbed in our skin fast, especially when our skin is exposed to sunlight. They are estrogen mimickers and are associated with endometriosis in women and lower sperm count in men. If you want a lip balm with SPF in it, look for ones with non-nano zinc oxide instead.
- 5. Fragrance or flavor: Companies are not legally required to disclose what chemicals make up “fragrance” or “flavor” on ingredients labels. Those words can mean absolutely any chemical, whether or not it has been tested for safety. Usually, it is a synthetic concoction that includes phthalates and synthetic musks, which are known hormone disruptors.

Ingredients For Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm
- Organic Beeswax Pellets
- Shea Butter
- Coconut Oil
- Olive Oil
- Essential Oil **optional
- Castor Oil
Substitutions
- Instead of Shea Butter, try Mango Butter or Coconut Butter.
- This recipe is very flexible, almost any ‘clean’ carrier oil can be used: Apricot Kernel, Avocado, Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Sunflower, Grapeseed or Fractionated Coconut.
Adding Essential Oils to Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm
Feel free to add essential oils to your homemade lip balm recipe, but use high-quality “edible” oils only. (Remember my daughter who likes to ‘taste’ her lip balm?) Organic is all the better! We love to use certified organic oils from Doterra, but you can use Young Living, Plant Therapy, whatever you prefer. Just make sure they filled with clean ingredients since they will be going on your lips.
Some of the most popular essential oils to flavor natural lip balm include peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen, sweet orange, pink grapefruit, vanilla, chamomile, lavender, and jasmine. Please note that certain citrus essential oils are considered “phototoxic”, which means they can increase the risk of sunburn while in direct sun – such as lemon, lime, and bergamot. However, this is mostly a concern when very high or undiluted concentrations of citrus oil is applied directly to skin. Sweet orange is not phytotoxic.
Supplies Needed
Thankfully this recipe is so easy it doesn’t require a ton of supplies, but you will need a few.
- A double-boiler. Or, create a makeshift double boiler by nesting a stainless steel bowl, heat-safe glass bowl, or smaller pot inside a larger pot.
- Small containers to store your final homemade lip balm. Consider options like these 1/2 ounce tins, 1 ounce tins, even smaller .15 ounce plastic tubes (like what I used) or cardboard chapstick tubes, tiny glass jars, or similar.
- Lip balm filling tray and spatula (if using .15 ounce plastic tubes).
- Optional: a glass measuring cup or similar smaller bowl/pitcher with a pour spout.
How To Make Homemade Beeswax Lip Balm
- To a double boiler on medium low heat, add the organic beeswax pellets, shea butter (or butter of choice), coconut oil and olive oil (or carrier oil of choice).
- Heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until all ingredients are completely melted.
- Once ingredients are completely melted, remove from heat and carefully add the essential oils and castor oil for extra shine.
- Quickly and carefully pour mixture into lip balm tubes.
- Allow the lip balms to cool for about an hour before putting on the cap.
As always, I hope you enjoy this recipe and found this post informative and helpful. Let me know if you try it, I always love getting feedback. Sending love and best wishes from our farm to yours!
